Sir Archie--as he is also known--is wearing typical aviator's kit from the open cockpit era, firing either his Webley pistol or a flare gun to attract attention, and hopefully rescue.
Of course, you can name him anything you like and he would be suitable for any airman of any country from WWI through the mid-1930s.
