Italian Squads in Bolt Action games

By Al Maurer on May 26, 2025May 26, 2025

NOTE: This is a compilation of two articles I found on Bolt Action forums and represents the opinions of the authors. Keep in mind that the recommendations are designed for competitive gaming, not necessarily for historical accuracy. That said, the squads themselves seem accurate, although the combining of them into a competitive army may not be.

Note also that the recommendations are not exhaustive. Missing are the Alpini, the medium tanks and assault guns, anti-tank guns, heavy machineguns, and the specialized desert vehicles.

Italian Squads in Bolt Action

In Bolt Action, Italian squads are a key part of building a competitive army. The Italian force is known for its unique challenges, as it has negative Army Special Rules, which means players need to focus on the units they want to use rather than optimizing for efficiency For example, Arditi squads equipped with submachine guns and light machine guns can be effective Additionally, Guastatori squads are recommended, but players can only field two per platoon

When building an Italian list, it’s important to consider the morale buff/debuff system. If you have inflicted two more unit kills on the enemy than they have on you, your units gain a +2 morale bonus, and vice versa for a -2 morale penalty. This system favors smaller, more elite armies, as inexperienced units die easily

For a balanced and competitive Italian army, it’s suggested to include infantry squads, machine gun teams, and light mortars. Tanks like the L6/40 and M14/41 are also highly recommended due to their cost-effectiveness and killing power

When selecting units, it’s advisable to avoid inexperienced units due to the -1 to hit penalty and the negative Army Special Rules. Units like Bersaglieri with feathered caps can also add a unique flavor to the army

For transport options, Italian trucks are not widely available, so players often use German trucks or consider 3D printing alternatives.

In summary, building an Italian army in Bolt Action requires careful consideration of unit composition and the unique challenges posed by the Army Special Rules

  3. Specialized Roles: Consider the specific roles of each unit and how they can complement each other. For example, flamethrower teams can support infantry in urban environments, while anti-tank teams can protect against enemy armor.
