Zouaves and Tirailleurs

The Zouaves and Tirailleurs were French native troops who wore what became known as Zouave-style dress.

The Zouaves, over time, became populated with Frenchmen who had settled in Algeria, although they were originally native Algerians. The Tirailleurs Algerien–who remained native Algerians–wore the same uniforms in different colors. These figures can also be used for the two Royal Moroccan Regiments, who wore zouave-style dress.

The Zouave style became very popular in the mid-19th century and so was  widely adopted–including by both sides in the American Civil War.

Zouaves and Tirailleurs fought in all French conflicts in these uniforms up through World War I.
