Description
German pack mules, designed to be used with our German Gebirgsjaeger (Mountain Troops).
Set consists of 4 mules, 2 of each kind shown. Included are standard wicker panniers which were used to carry a wide variety of equipment.
The Mountain troops used a large number of mules for transport in mountain terrain. They carried everything from ammunition, signal and medical equipment to mountain guns such as the 75mm mountain howitzer.
In the photo below, note the panniers. Note also that the muleteer carries his rifle slung across his chest. This was the regulation and our Mountain Troops carry their rifles this way. When the mules were carrying a load, the muleteers carried their own rucksacks; when unloaded, the mules carried them.
