The Bersaglieri were Italy’s elite light infantry, originally formed in 1836 as highly mobile marksmen.
During World War 2, 12 Bersaglieri regiments were raised, maintaining their reputation for toughness despite personnel shortages. They served as light infantry, scouts, and convoy escorts, often fighting with distinction.
The Bersaglieri were a key component of Italy’s celere (fast) divisions, which combined cavalry, motorized infantry, and light tanks for rapid maneuver warfare. These divisions were designed for mobility and flexibility, often using bicycles and motorcycles for quick movement. The Bersaglieri in celere divisions were distinct from standard infantry, emphasizing speed and aggressive tactics. Their mobility made them valuable for reconnaissance, screening, and rapid assaults.
The Bersaglieri are famous for their distinctive headgear—a wide-brimmed hat adorned with black western capercaillie (a woodland grouse) feathers. These feathers were originally intended for camouflage and to shade the marksman’s shooting eye, but they later became a symbol of pride and tradition. Even their combat helmets were decorated with these feathers–as are all our Bersaglieri figures.
The Bersaglieri were otherwise uniformed and equipped as standard Italian infantry. These Bersaglieri would be painted in standard Italian gray-green (grigio-verde) colors or else khaki for North Africa.
